It can be difficult to get rid of an old mattress, they're big, heavy and not always easily recycled.

Sell your mattress online

If your mattress is still in a good condition, you can try to sell it online.

This is a great way to get rid of an old mattress and make some extra money at the same time.

You could sell your mattress using Facebook marketplace or Gumtree. Here, local customers will collect, or you might deliver the mattress directly to them.

eBay is also good for getting your products in front of a larger audience, potentially allowing you to charge more.

However, as mattresses are large and heavy delivery may not be cheap, you could instead use collection only to avoid this.

When using different selling platforms, it’s important to check and be aware of any selling fees.

Give your mattress to charity

If your mattress is in a saleable condition, then another option is to donate it to charity.

Charities such as British Heart Foundation and Emmaus will collect your mattress for free, for sale in of their stores.

This not only keeps your mattress out of landfill, but also helps to raise funds for a good cause.

Take your mattress to a local tip

Your local tip may take your old mattress. However, some wont so it’s best to call or check online in advance.

Mattresses are difficult to recycle at then are made from a combination of different materials so it's likely that if taken to a tip it will end up in landfill.

Get your council to collect your mattress

If you're looking to get rid of an old mattress, your local council can provide a bulky waste collection service.

This might be a free or chargeable service dependant on your local council.

For example, North Lincolnshire council offer free collection of up to 3 bulky items once per year, but charge for additional collections and items.

In most cases, the council will collect the mattress within a few days of you making the request.

However, it's worth checking whether there are any restrictions in place before making your request.

In North Lincolnshire, mattresses are covered for bulky item collection, but other councils may differ.

Like the previous option, mattresses disposed of this way are likely to end up in landfill.
